Emily Skaja grew up between two cemeteries in rural Illinois. Her first book, BRUTE, won the Walt Whitman Award from the Academy of American Poets and will be published by Graywolf in April of 2019. Emily is a graduate of the Purdue University MFA program. Her poems have been published in Blackbird, Crazyhorse, FIELD, Gulf Coast, and other journals. She is currently finishing a PhD at the University of Cincinnati in the Creative Writing and Literature program with a certificate in Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies. She is also the Associate Poetry Editor of Southern Indiana Review
