In the Aftermath of a Natural Disaster

by Samantha Duncan

There will always be
                 a Waffle House open.

There will always be
a man who isn't joking when he sees
a shelter's request for feminine hygiene
products and questions a tampon's ability
                 to absorb all that floodwater.

There will always be
                 an official downplaying.

There will always be
a reporter and a cameraman taking up
two evacuee spaces in a rescue boat.

There will always be
whitecaps on I-10, white walls stained,
                 white survivors.

There will always be
the living found cradling their dead.
