Proem at the Gate


We followed the mechanical

Cormorant down     through the white gate

That opened in the lake on the sur-

face of the lake through the bright white


Gate paper gate a cut-out paper

Gate like a paper     doll if the arms

Were torn from the shoulders if the legs

Were torn from the hips fitted like bars


Two on each side beside the bod-

y triangle the bird dove hun-

gry through the gate the bird dove hunt-

ing through     the gate its body tensed


For food although it wasn’t hunt-

ing it was leading us its bod-

y tensed     to kill and eat     to Hell

We pulled ourselves     over the rim


Of the void on the face of the lake     and fell
