The BOAAT BOOK PRIZE is awarded annually to an emerging poet who has not previously published a book of poems.

WHEN: April 15, 2017 - May 31, 2017 (ends at 11:59 EST)


Dean Young has published eleven books of poetry, including finalists for the Pulitzer Prize and Griffin Award. He has received fellowships from the Guggenheim Foundation and the NEA, as well as an Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the William Livingston Chair of Poetry at the University of Texas, Austin.


  • poets writing in the English language are eligible

  • poets are not eligible to submit a manuscript if they have studied with the guest judge in full-time accredited courses or know the guest judge on a personal level

  • manuscripts should be 48 to 75 pages of poetry, submitted in .docx or PDF formats only;

  • poems previously published in journals are acceptable—be sure to include an acknowledgements page if appropriate 

  • include two cover sheets: one with the title of your manuscript, your name, telephone number, and address—the other with the title of the manuscript

  • finalists manuscripts will be sent to the judge without identification (we print the final 15 manuscripts and mail them to our judge)

  • the author's biography is collected separately in the Submittable cover letter

  • simultaneous submissions are permissible, but submitters are asked to notify BOAAT Press immediately if a manuscript is picked up for publication elsewhere

  • manuscript revisions are not permitted during the submission period

  • submitting multiple manuscripts is fine with entry fees for each

READING PROCESS: Every manuscript will be read by THREE different readers. All of our preliminary readers are poets who have graduated from an MFA program or beyond. These readers have won multiple awards including the National Poetry Series, the Utah Book Prize, the FENCE Modern Poets Prize, and more. They'll select fifteen of the best manuscripts to send our judge. 

READING FEE: $25.00 paid through Submittable


  • a foreword by Dean Young

  • a $2,000 honorarium 

  • 50 free copies

  • the book will be slated for publication around Summer/Fall of 2018 

ANNOUNCEMENTS: 15 finalists will be announced by August, and the winner will be announced by September, possibly October.

FINALISTS: If we have the funds to publish one or two more books from the finalists' list then those will be selected by the team of readers and the editor-in-chief of BOAAT Press.
