What Happens to Her for the First Time Will Happen Again
A baby cries the entire bus ride.
As we reach the last inbound stop,
a man pushes from behind me
towards the girl
slung against her mother’s chest.
He says hello to the child, tells her I’m here now,
you can stop crying.
He says it again and again.
She’s silent. He touches her face.
As he steps to the door, he tells us all:
they know, babies and dogs, they know
a good man. Some people clap.
